DISCOVER

Skills Ready partners with educators from across the province to produce experiential activities that provide ways for young people to connect with employers and community.

In many cases, opportunities to access future employment have been created.

Awareness

Skills Ready Presentations explore concepts around employability. From the core attributes of attitude, skills and knowledge that comprise the Industry ASK, to the basics of workplace safety that are explored in our LearnSafe presentations - students take part in guided discussions and activities that develop these attributes and demonstrate that they are employable.

LearnSafe - Safety Talks

LearnSafe brings worker and public safety information to high schools.

Enhancing safety awareness for secondary school students in B.C. is an essential component of getting youth ready for employment and keeping them safe while in the work place.

LearnSafe Talks bring an industry perspective to the classroom. During a one-hour presentation, industry professionals will:

  • Share real-life experiences and learnings from the job site
  • Discuss the importance of a worker’s right to know, right to participate, right to refuse and right to no discrimination
  • Conduct activities that are designed to increase knowing and awareness of workplace safety
  • Demonstrate the various levels of personal protective equipment required for various occupations
  • Share links to valuable resources, provide materials and engage students in a Q & A session

Students will leave the presentation with an understanding of the importance of safety training and awareness on the job site, and why safety is a critical element in achieving employment.

Attitude, Skills and Knowledge Talks

Through consultation with industry and educators across the province, three core expectations were identified for young people starting out in the skilled trades and technologies. The attributes - ATTITUDE, SKILLS and KNOWLEDGE, are the backbone of this discussion.

During this one-hour discussion, industry professionals and career catalysts will:

  • Share real-life experiences and learnings from work and life
  • Discuss what industry professionals look for in a new hire
  • Share ways that youth can demonstrate that they have the attitude, skills and knowledge that will help them be successful in their first job
