HONOUR YOUR HEALTH: SKILL BUILDING THROUGH PLAY

HONOUR YOUR HEALTH: SKILL BUILDING THROUGH PLAY

by Skills Ready Team / Wednesday, 03 April 2019 / Published in NEWS

Through our Ultimate Skills initiative, we are proud to support Ultimate Spirit, an ISPARC Honour Your Health Challenge, developed to introduce the youth of Stz-uminus First Nation to the game of Ultimate Frisbee.

On Monday, March 11th Ultimate Spirit took flight with a gathering of community and supporters in celebration of life, health and play.

Over the course of 10 sessions, youth are invited to join in a journey of learning the game – based in the values of connection, inclusion, play, spirit, community and respect.

The day began with a traditional welcome of singing and dancing from members of the Stz’uminus community and Chief John Elliott officially welcomed the University of Victoria Ultimate team and students from WSANEC School.

After the welcome, the students and players took to the field where the UVic players demonstrated a game and youth cheered. After the game, youth and spectators were invited onto the field to practice their skills begin to learn the rules of the game. The day wrapped with a feast hosted by the community and a few more skill developing games.

A fantastic day was had by all!

The Honour Your Health Challenge is sponsored by ISPARC.
Additional support has been provided by Ultimate Canada, BC Ultimate Society, Stz’uminus First Nation, The Victoria Ultimate Players Society and the University of Victoria.

We would like to express our thanks and gratitude to the Stz’uminus First Nation community for their hospitality and welcome during the event. We look forward to watching the youth progress over the 10 sessions.
